Google Employees Demand Company Cut Ties With Israel

On Wednesday, a group of "Jewish and allied" Google employees demanded that the company end its contracts with the Israeli Defense Forces and publicly condemn Israel.


250 members of the Jewish Diaspora in Tech group wrote to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, urging the company to "heed the requests framed by Palestinian Googlers and center their voices going forward." The letter also asks Google to donate to Palestinian relief organizations, make a formal statement "recognize the pain" of Palestinians in a formal statement, and reject any definition of anti-Semitism that holds that criticism of Israel or Zionism is anti-Semitic."


The letter comes as Israel continues to be targeted by Hamas, which has fired thousands of rockets at the country. Google was chastised this week after its YouTube subsidiary twice removed a video defending Israeli airstrikes in Gaza. According to the Washington Free Beacon, YouTube blamed the censorship on the shoddy technology it used during the coronavirus pandemic.


Other groups of Google employees, according to the signatories, have demanded that Google take a "one-sided pro-Israel perspective" and "support the sovereign state." The allegation has been repeated by other media outlets.


Jewish Diaspora in Tech arose from the "Jewglers," a Google affinity group for Jewish employees. According to the Verge, the Diaspora group is made up of members who are dissatisfied with Jewglers' generally pro-Israel views.


Google has previously bowed to employee pressure, declining to renew Project Maven, an AI contract with the Department of Defense, in 2018 due to internal opposition.
