Nuclear Fusion Breakthrough

Nuclear fusion is a process in which atomic nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus, releasing a large amount of energy in the process. This energy is released through the conversion of some of the mass of the nuclei into energy, according to Einstein's famous equation E=mc² , where E is energy, m is mass, and c is the speed of light in a vacuum.

Nuclear fusion reactions occur naturally in stars, where they provide the energy that keeps the star shining. On Earth, scientists and engineers are working on developing fusion as a source of clean, abundant energy that could help meet the world's growing energy needs.

Fusion reactions have the potential to provide a virtually limitless source of energy, as the fuel for fusion reactions, hydrogen, is abundant in the Earth's oceans. In addition, fusion reactions produce no greenhouse gases or other harmful pollutants, making it a potentially attractive option for addressing climate change.

However, achieving controlled nuclear fusion on Earth has proven to be challenging, and much research and development work is still needed before it can be realized as a practical energy source. Scientists and engineers are actively working on developing technologies and approaches that could make fusion a viable energy source in the future.

Scientists at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory's National Ignition Facility in California fired 192 laser beams at a pinhead-sized target holding deuterium and tritium on December 5, 2022, and a fusion reaction succeeded in releasing more energy than the lasers delivered. However, this achievement of inertial confinement fusion is not only the first time in history that nuclear fusion has worked under controlled conditions (as opposed to a thermonuclear bomb); those lasers also disintegrated green energy fanatics' arguments in favor of dismantling the world's $85 trillion economy, which is 90% or more based on fossil fuels. They are now as discredited as Martin Fleischmann and Stanley Pons' clumsy claims of conducting fusion at ambient temperature in 1989, despite the two's outstanding scientific qualifications at the time.

The privately funded fusion sector will now go forward, transforming experimental achievements like these into a viable source of clean, safe energy.
