Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), said on Sunday that mask use is likely to become a seasonal phenomenon aimed at stopping the spread of other airborne illnesses such as the flu.
“At what point can we stop wearing masks outside? At what point, if vaccinated people get together, do you take the masks off?” Chuck Todd of NBC News posed the question. “But is the mask going to be something we have with us in a seasonal aspect?”
“You know, I think that’s quite possible. People have gotten used to wearing masks. Clearly, if you look at the data, [a mask] diminishes respiratory diseases,” Fauci replied. “We’ve had practically a non-existent flu season this year merely because people were doing the kinds of public health things that were directed predominantly against COVID-19.”
According to the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Australia's flu numbers dropped dramatically during the winter, owing primarily to the use of masks.
“So it is conceivable that as we go on, a year or two or more from now, that during certain seasonal periods when you have respiratory-borne viruses like the flu, people might actually elect to wear masks to diminish the likelihood that you’ll spread these respiratory-borne diseases,” Fauci stated.
Throughout the pandemic, Dr. Fauci has flipped-flopped several times. As previously reported by The Daily Wire, the NIAID director stated in March 2020 that face coverings were not required for the general public.
“When you’re in the middle of an outbreak, wearing a mask might make people feel a little bit better and it might even block a droplet, but it’s not providing the perfect protection that people think that it is,” Fauci said at the time.
He and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) supported mask-wearing a month later, in April 2020, according to The Daily Wire. Fauci, on the other hand, was caught without a mask at a baseball game later in the summer of 2020.
Fauci stated in January 2021 that a single mask is insufficient. In fact, he advocated for "double-masking," which involves wearing a surgical mask over a cloth mask.
“If you have a physical covering with one layer, you put another layer on it, just makes common sense that it likely would be more effective,” Dr. Fauci noted, according to an earlier article from The Daily Wire.
The CDC issued new mask-wearing guidelines at the end of April, stating that those who are "fully vaccinated" no longer need to wear masks outside, according to The Daily Wire. Since then, Jeff Zients, the Biden administration's COVID-19 response coordinator, has stated that fully vaccinated Americans will be allowed to remove their masks.
According to The Daily Wire, Ziets told CNN's Jake Tapper, "I think everyone is tired, and wearing a mask is — it can be a pain, but we are getting there." “And the light at the end of the tunnel becomes increasingly bright. Let us maintain our vigilance. Let us stick to the CDC's recommendations. And as the CDC's guidance evolves, vaccinated people will be given more and more opportunities to remove their mask.”
