Police declare riot, state of emergency extended in violence-plagued Portland

On Friday night, anarchists in Portland smashed windows, spray-painted buildings with graffiti, and broke into businesses, continuing a year-long wave of violence in the protest-weary Oregon city.

Friday night, police declared a new riot, and Mayor Ted Wheeler, who had previously welcomed the protesters but had grown tired of their violence, declared a state of emergency in the city until noon Monday.

"The anarchists have called for more destruction," Wheeler said. "I've directed the police bureau to arrest and engage illegal activity whenever they can safely do so."

Wheeler's phrasing Friday was a far cry from a year ago, when he called federal agents who came to the city to beef up security at government buildings a "occupation." The mayor now refers to the protesters as "self-described anarchists" and has urged residents to report any illegal activity they are involved in, such as recording license plate numbers.

The mayor stated, "Our job is to unmask them, arrest them and prosecute them," "People know who these criminals are."

The guilty verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial in Minnesota sparked the latest round of violence. Wheeler's phrasing Friday was a far cry from a year ago, when he called federal agents who came to the city to beef up security at government buildings a "occupation."
